Asian Giant Toad Bufo asper

Description: Fairly widespread across Southeast Asia where it lives along streams and rivers due to its’ semi-aquatic nature. It is active at night but remains near the water while hunting for insects and going about its’ business. This is a large, heavy-set toad; females reach 4 to 5½" with males being smaller by an inch or so. Dorsal color is generally a dark earth tone shade of green, gray, black or brown, the belly is light colored with dark specks. The skin is rough and warty and they have distinct paratoid glands capable of secreting toxins.

Temperature: Daytime 75° to 80°F with about a 5° to 10°F drop at night. A temperature gradient should be provided throughout the enclosure.

Humidity: High, best at about 70 to 80%.

Lighting: Not important, plant grow lights may be needed if live plants are used. A red bulb or dim white light can be useful for viewing nocturnal activities.

Feeding: Large crickets and mealworms are fine as a staple diet but a variety of other insects should be offered. A good vitamin/mineral supplement should be given twice a week for adults and more often for young, growing frogs.

Habitat: A 20 gallon long or a larger tank with a cover will work for a couple of toads, set it up as a semi - aquatic habitat with about ½ water and ½ land. These are stream bank dwelling toads so the enclosure should be set up to mimic that type of habitat. Land areas must be accessible and aquatic or houseplants with the roots in the water help to create a nice habitat. Hiding places such as caves, wood structures and burrows under rocks should be provided. Under gravel filtration is an effective way to maintain water quality as long as regular cleaning and water changes are performed.

Sexing: Males have a dark throat and nuptial pads near the thumbs.

Breeding: Captive breeding has not yet been documented. In the wild, males call from separate spots along stream/river banks and do not form choruses. Reproduction takes place throughout the year with clutch sizes ranging from around 10,000 to 15,000 eggs! Spawning normally takes place in slow-moving areas out of the main current.
The dark colored tadpoles are flat shaped, bottom feeders that grow to about ½" before metamorphosing.
