Red-Legged Kassina

Red-Legged Kassina Kassina maculata

Description: Also known as the Red-Legged Running Frog. From the eastern African lowland savannas where it is often found in or near water. It is mostly nocturnal but will often come out of hiding if food is offered during the day. The fingers and toes have adhesive pads to make them arboreal but they are terrestrial as well. These frogs are quite attractive, mostly tan with black spots and red flash coloring. Size is between 2½" to 3". For such a calm frog, they always seem to be in a hurry, running almost everywhere they go. It is easy to tame them enough to take food from your fingers. Great pets that are easy to care for.

Temperature: 72 to 77°F daytime with a small drop at night. Seasonal variations may help to stimulate breeding.

Humidity: High, 70 to 80%. Seasonal variations occur in their natural habitat.

Lighting: Plant grow lights are necessary for live plants. Use a timer with an average of 12 hours on / 12 hours off. A dim night light is required for viewing nocturnal activities.

Feeding: Voracious, will eat a variety of insects and even earthworms. Crickets and mealworms are fine as a staple diet but giving a variety of prey items is important. A good quality vitamin/mineral supplement should be given once or twice a week. Provide a water dish large enough to soak in or better yet, a good sized filtered water area.

Habitat: A 10-gallon tank is sufficient for 2 or 3 frogs. These guys are good at escaping and will push open a lightweight lid. Be sure the top is secure enough to contain them. It also needs to have some ventilation holes. Set it up as a jungle habitat with live plants, climbing branches, hiding places and water to soak in.

Sexing: The males have a coarse one-syllable call, usually made while floating in the water.

Breeding: Provide a slightly cooler and dryer (65 - 70%) period of 2 to 3 months prior to breeding. Raise the temps and humidity and feed them well. A good size water area is needed as a place to lay the eggs, which are attached to underwater plants.

The tadpoles grow quite large, up to 5" long.
