Red-eyed leaf litter frog Leptobrachium hendricksoni

Description: Also known as the Spotted leaf litter frog. From Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia where it is found in subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests and heavily disturbed areas. This is an odd, almost eerie looking little frog with a large angular head, short thin legs, long thin forearms and strange red eyes with small vertical pupils. Overall color is dull brownish with darker markings and/or spots. A distinguishing characteristic is the white belly with black spots. Adult size is 1½ to 2" for males, females can be up to an inch larger. Leptobrachium smithi is very similar but grows to a larger size.
Most of the time these slow moving frogs are seen on the ground.
Eye color is variable between the different Leptobrachium species and can also be orange, green, blue, black or white.
The generalized tadpoles are large and robust with strong mouth parts.

Temperature: 70° to 80°F during the day, 5° to 10°F cooler at night. A temperature gradient throughout the enclosure should be provided.

Humidity: High, 70 to 80%.

Lighting: Plant grow lights are usually necessary for a jungle habitat to thrive. Use a timer to provide a regular day and night cycle. Seasonal day length fluctuations are not needed but could help to stimulate breeding. A dim night light is required for viewing nocturnal activities.

Habitat: A 15-gallon tank should be adequate for a pair. Set it up as a terrestrial jungle habitat with lots of plants and hiding places. A large, shallow dish of clean water should be available at all times.
